The fall season means change, growth, and that oh-so-cozy feeling of nostalgia for many of us. I’m talking about leaves changing colors, the smell of a firepit, hot cider on the stove, Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic on repeat, and a social calendar that fills up quickly with all of my favorite fall activities. The weather turning from hot and sticky to cool and breezy has me heading for the patio every chance I get. Whether it’s having my morning coffee, watching football, or reading, I’m always looking for an opportunity to take in life’s little joys in the open air.
Fall Entertaining and Dining: Al Fresco Style
I love hosting dinner parties in the fall, especially al fresco style. There is something special about enjoying the company of friends and family outdoors with great food, wine, and music. My favorite way to do this is by cooking a nice meal paired with delicious drinks and savoring every moment outside. Fall entertaining outdoors is a lovely way to gather with friends to unplug from the busyness that is right around the corner. My love for fall has inspired me to share my favorite al fresco dinner party tips and menu options with a fall theme.

The Star of the Show: Food and Drinks
If you decide to opt for hors’d’oeuvres and a cocktail hour, I’ve got you covered here! Having a cocktail hour is a great way for your guests to mingle and sets a relaxed tone for the evening. It also gives you, the host, a chance to tinker in the kitchen for last minute touches before the party starts. I personally like to serve a meal in courses for fall entertaining dinner parties so that my guests can chat in between bites and pace ourselves for the night.
Hors’D’oeuvres: Boursin Stuffed Mushrooms and Apple Gruyere Pecan Tarts
I like to go with a couple of light, scrumptious small bite appetizers that pair well with a variety of drink options. These Boursin Stuffed Mushrooms from Megan Ruffles of The Chic(ish) Chick are always a crowd pleaser and require only a few steps and ingredients.

Another fall entertaining-themed hors’d’oeuvre that can be made and served in individual portions are my Apple Gruyère Pecan Tarts. These are a lighter twist on the traditional apple, brie, and walnut puff pastry that we all know and love. The gruyere is just sharp enough to complement nutty toasted pecan halves and a couple of sweet and sour honeycrisp apple slices.

Drinks
Both of these appetizers pair beautifully with a crisp glass of Chablis or this Apple Cider Sangria from How Sweet Eats that can be made ahead of time in a large batch to accommodate your guests. I suggest having a mocktail option as well. The Mocktail Edit’s Salted Maple Citrus Mocktail is an interesting twist on classic fall flavors. I love when my palate is surprised, and this mocktail does just that!

I also suggest using a drink dispenser like this one for guests to serve themselves if possible. It will save you a ton of time from playing bartender.
First Course
First course options can be a soup and/or salad, which is a nice way to transition from the hors’d’oeuvres to a slightly heavier entree item. My go-to salad recipe for a fall entertaining dinner party is this Apple Pecan Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette from Crowded Kitchen. It has a base of mixed greens and is topped with apples, pecans, feta cheese, dried cranberries, and a pepita (pumpkin seed) brittle that is to die for, all tossed in a light balsamic vinaigrette. It is the perfect marriage of fall flavors!

If you’re opting for soup, I highly recommend trying this Butternut Squash Soup recipe from Love and Lemons. It has the perfect balance of nutty and sweet flavors.

Second Course
In my book, pasta is an obvious choice when hosting a group. It can be made in large quantities and doesn’t require a ton of time in the kitchen. It’s also easy to make alongside other dishes when you’re in between the stove and countertop. I absolutely love the classic fall flavors in Half-Baked Harvest’s Sage Brown Butter Pumpkin Pasta Alfredo. The notes in this dish are absolutely magnificent. The aromatic sage complements the sweetness of the pumpkin and the toastiness of the browned butter.

Third Course
For the main (meat or fish) course, I like to suggest a couple of different options here. Depending on whether your guests have dietary restrictions, you may need to modify the protein being served. Two fun and delicious choices for a fall dinner party are Ina Garten’s Chilean Sea Bass and this Chicken Normandy (French Apple Cider Chicken) from Seasoning Moments. I advise sticking to just one of these to keep things simple.
If you decide to go with fish, sea bass is an excellent choice. It is mild, buttery, and perfectly flaky. Most sea bass recipes I’ve tried require only a few ingredients. The fish itself brings so much flavor and doesn’t have a “fishy” taste.
If you’re opting for the chicken dish, I promise this one is a crowd pleaser and can be easily made in one pot. It uses chicken thighs, which gives it more of a rich, creamy flavor and brings an otherwise boring chicken dish to life!

Fourth Course
I’m not shy to say that my favorite part of any meal is dessert, hands down. I always have a raging sweet tooth after a savory meal. When I’m doing fall entertaining at my house for a large group, dessert is another course where I tend to choose something with minimal ingredients. It is convenient to have something that can be made ahead of time when you are juggling prep for multiple dishes.
I love these White Chocolate Mousse Tartlets from SavorTales. They are simple, tasty, and will finish off your dinner party beautifully. I personally love desserts like these that are served in individual portions as it is typically less messy and makes for easier cleanup. Plus, the presentation is beautiful!

Decorations and Table Settings
I can never decide if I want to go with a warm autumn ambience or a moody and witchy theme. An easy solution to that is to combine the two for the best fall entertaining vibes. Why not?! It is totally possible to create the best of both worlds by blending different styles. This is YOUR party, after all, and you can make it as unique as you would like. I curated a Pinterest board for this theme; I like to say it has a “warm and witchy” aesthetic.
For decorations, I advise starting with a couple larger pieces and building from there. It might be a whimsical candelabra like this one from Etsy or these adorable Illuminated Vine Pumpkin String Lights from Anthropologie. I find it super easy to keep building once you have a few focal points for your decorations.

To get started on table settings and tablescapes, I highly recommend checking out this post from Vintage Floral Cottage for an intro to tablescaping if you’re not sure where to start. It lays out how to go about coordinating ideas and bringing them to life on your tablescape for fall entertaining.

Thrift stores are a gold mine for tablescape pieces, candelabras, votive candle holders, and the like. You can find some really amazing things if you’re willing to go on a bit of a scavenger hunt. Using taper candles in old wine bottles is another great way to decorate for fall entertaining. It’s inexpensive and they can be used interchangeably. There are truly so many possibilities with this one – you can use spray paint, decoupage, and many other techniques to liven up a plain wine bottle and turn it into something charming.

Music and Magic
I can tell you that the food and drinks alone are going to make for a magical evening of fall entertaining. Turn on a little music from the Practical Magic soundtrack, with a few Halloween-themed tunes mixed in, and you’ve got yourself perfect fall dinner party vibes. Here is a curated playlist to take your guests through a few decades of autumnal nostalgia while you enjoy delicious food and drinks together. Now that you’ve got the menu perfected, you’re all set to host a spectacular evening!
Whether you’re wrapping up with a final sip of your Apple Cider Sangria or debating the merits of Hocus Pocus versus Practical Magic, you can rest easy knowing you’ve provided more than just a meal—you’ve captured the magic of the season by creating a memorable fall entertaining experience.
